More Than Decoration: How Art Defines Our Spaces and Ourselves

Eowyn Driscoll • Mar 31, 2022

Even Though Art is Decorative, It's Not Just Decoration

April is National Decorating Month, so we wanted to talk about why we believe that having art in our homes is more than mere decoration. While it’s true that art is a beautiful addition to our homes, the art we have says a lot about who we are and what we value. So here are five reasons why art belongs in our spaces, and how it can change our lives.

The Art We Choose Means Something To Us.

Choosing art is more than choosing a pretty picture - we’re often choosing a piece because it moves us, or reminds us of something, or because we are interested in what the artist was trying to say. While we do, sometimes, choose a piece based strictly on the way it looks - even then it says something deeper about who we are.

Art can be an excellent investment
Did you know that Van Gogh didn’t sell a single painting during his lifetime, and yet, today he’s considered one of the greatest painters to ever live? Most art tends to go up in value as the artist becomes more well known. The art you buy today could sell for many times what you paid for it in 20 years.

Art shows our personalities

The art that we put in our homes says a lot of things about us - who we are, what we like. It can be a subtle way of expressing our deeper selves, one that can affect  the people around us. Which leads us to our third point…

Art is a conversation starter.

One of our clients, Barry Feldman, told us that his art dresses up his home, but that he choose art in order to create excitement in his space. He says:

“All my artwork differs, in order to offer excitement to both myself, and the guests that visit the home.  Original artwork makes a home very welcoming to guests.  They tend to gravitate around the artwork as they enter our home.”

Art gives us something to reflect on

Not only does art give our guests something to look at and talk about, it gives us a focal point to meditate on. Art helps us keep in mind the vastness of the world around us, reminding us of our past and linking us to the present and the future.

So go forth and fill your homes with art, and remember that you’re not just decorating your home - you’re personalizing your space with something that will influence how you and your guests interact with your space.

So, Whether your space is large or small, and whether you want to say something about yourself, get your guests talking, or just put something beautiful on your walls, there is a piece of art out there waiting for you.

To help you find that special piece, we've curated an edit of some of our favorite pieces in the Janus Gallery Collection on Our Artsy.
