Thank You, Women Artists!

Skylar Dunbar • Mar 14, 2022

Women's voices have always guided the abstract movement, it's time we acknowledged them.

During this International Women’s Month, the Janus Gallery would like to take the time to thank the women abstract artists who have been a primary source of inspiration for our artists and whose legacies have transformed the narrative of contemporary art. Women artists have been historically underrepresented and written out of art historical narratives despite their skill and artistry forging new pathways that continue to transform contemporary art into the present day.

Few artistic genres have so thoroughly excluded women artists as Abstract art, and the Janus Gallery, feels it is necessary to credit the women artists who have made it possible for our artists to redefine art in their own terms. From
Lee Krasner, whose ingenuity and contributions to American Abstract Expressionism were consistently overshadowed by her relationship with Jackson Pollock, to Hilma af Klint, whose works predate Wassily Kandinsky and rival his title as the originator of Abstract art, the importance of women Abstract artists has been routinely reduced and omitted from history.

Even in the contemporary age, Abstract artists such as
Julie Mehretu and Field Kallop continue to push the limits of contemporary art but are denied the place in the spotlight they rightfully deserve.

We are currently representing three individual and unique women artists who's work we hope to one day see on the canon of mainstream male artists:
Zeerak Ahmed, Valentina Bogomazova and Susie Sharpe. These three women bring their voices to the temporal abstractionist movement, and we are proud to have them on our roster.

At the Janus Gallery, our every effort is rooted in the principles of Temporal Abstraction, our guiding philosophy that emphasizes the importance of contemplating time and memory. During this International Women’s Month, we would like to ask that you allot a special space within your memory for these women artists, whose work deserves to awestrike and inspire a much greater audience than they have reached. The Janus Gallery will continue to fulfill its mission of hosting underrepresented artists and promoting the message of its own Temporal Abstraction movement, and we would be unable to do so were it not for the bravery of the women Abstract artists who came before us. Thank you.
